Welcome to the production blog for The Price of Plastic, a radio documentary that will unwrap why we, as a nation, are so reliant on single-use plastic packaging, and why buying loose products are seemingly more expensive than their pre-packaged counterparts.
With climate emergencies declared by the majority of UK councils over the summer months, our planet cannot sustain our current habits. But how can people change when having an ethical compass is unattainable due to financial constraints?
The amount of plastic in our nation's supermarkets absolutely baffles me. A personal frustration of mine as someone just entering their twenties,
There are a plethora of documentaries that talk about plastic pollution in the UK and overseas, but there are limited sources available that focus on our plastic problem from a simultaneous financial and ethical angle. For example, the BBC's War on Plastic with Hugh and Anita focuses on money for a small period in episode one of the three-part series.
Pitching this idea on 11th October with the intention of it being molded for Radio 1 and 1Xtra Newsbeat, I outlined my high aspirations to speak with CEOs and Managing Directors of our biggest supermarket chains such as Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Asda, as well as those in positions in packaging. I'm currently in the midst of speaking with some eco-friendly businesses and environmental experts to shed light on and embellish the significance of our reliance on single-use plastic, and what needs to be done, whether by businesses or consumers, to combat the problem.
Keep up to date with the project on this blog, or via The Price of Plastic's Twitter account.
