Teju Adisa-Farrar is a California-based writer, geographer and poet, with specialisms in spatial equity, environmental justice and urbanism.
During our interview, we discussed that consumers, even with the best intentions of cutting back on single-use plastics, face financial constraints and can't physically afford to do so - something Teju herself knew all too well as her days as a student.
Speaking both from a personal perspective as well as that of an expert in her field, Teju expressed her view that having any ethical standpoint has an elitist spin, with control falling to those with money or power over what products are readily available, and at what cost - whether that be financial or environmental.
The availability, or lack thereof, when shopping, Teju addresses, is another issue faced by consumers. But with big supermarkets saying that supply will come with demand, how is a demand to be created when the products arent readily available in the first place?
