PROFILE: Jo Hand

Whilst on my trip to London to visit Santiago Navarro at Garçon Wines, I met Jo Hand, CEO of Giki.

Sitting with her at the National Theatre, she talked me through what Giki is as a concept, and well as a fully-functioning app.

Launched in 2018, Giki aims to help people overcome ethical obstacles that matter to them when shopping with brands nationwide.

The app allows users to scan the barcodes of their items either as they shop or when they bring them home, and rewards them with badges - allowing us to understand the impacts behind the products we buy.

There are 13 badges available at the moment, ranging from 'Recyclable packaging' to 'Low carbon footprint' to 'Sustainable Palm Oil" - but that figure is only growing.

Back to plastic packaging - with complex names for materials making it increasingly difficult to decipher what you're actually buying whilst shopping (and that's before we even have to think about if we can recycle it or not!) Jo explains that it's natural to feel overwhelmed, but that's where Giki's here to help.

Here's what Jo had to say about what Giki does to help those who are conscious about how their products are wrapped:
